San Miguel 3.1Ml Quake

Hi All. The series of 4 quakes north of San Miguel today are not on a know fault. The map I have shows no fault in the area. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t any faults there, just that none are known to the there. About 10 miles north of the quakes there are a number of active oil wells. Also these quakes are to far to the west there by almost eliminating any chance that they are associated with the recent bore hole that is located to the east of the San Andreas fault.

As you can see the quake activity within a 5 mile radius of today’s has been on the low side until 2002/06/04.

With quakes occurring on both side of the fault this could mean that there just may be considerable amount of stress on the San Andreas fault south of Parkfield and maybe, even south of Cholame. This would put it in the area of the Parkfield seismic gap similar to the area of the M>7.1 Loma Prieta quake of 1989. Of course this is nothing more then just a guess on my part, but a guess that is based on a little more 4 years of following all of the quake activity along that segment of the fault.
