You might want to separate those flares which are earth-directed from those that are not. This could probably be done by monitoring solar wind speed and proton/electron lflux a few days after the flares. No large changes should be seen if the flare was not earth directed.

Without this consideration, you may not see any significance.

Sounds like getting Lowell's paper (or having Lowell check back in on the board here) would be a good idea.
