Hi Chris,

These are the quakes I was referencing in my prior post:

2.8 2002/07/09 02:18:09 36.025N 119.484W 20.5 11 km ( 7 mi) SE of Corcoran, CA
1.2 2002/07/12 07:50:50 35.998N 118.335W 3.0 31 km (19 mi) ENE of Pine Flat, CA
1.5 2002/07/10 22:18:04 38.719N 121.623W 2.5 14 km ( 8 mi) ENE of Woodland, CA
07/07/2002 06:01:01 PM 1.8 MD 5.6 (miles) 3 mile(s) NNW of Lake Pillsbury, CA
07/05/2002 08:40:24 AM 2.3 MD 4.2 (miles) 10 mile(s) NNE of Nice, CA
06/29/2002 02:31:42 PM 2.0 MD 2.9 (miles) 9 mile(s) ENE of Woodland, CA (map)
06/29/2002 12:34:57 PM 1.8 MD 2.9 (miles) 9 mile(s) ENE of Woodland, CA (map)
06/29/2002 12:15:52 PM 2.0 MD 4.7 (miles) 9 mile(s) ENE of Woodland, CA (map)
06/29/2002 12:13:32 PM 2.6 MD 9.8 (miles) 10 mile(s) NE of Woodland, CA (map)

The data was obtained from the USGS Menlo Park Office and the Seismic State Web Site.

It has been a number of years since Woodland has had any earthquakes, although in the past they have had moderate activity.

Lake Pillsbury is volcanic in nature and from time to time does suffer from small swarms of quakes. You may not recall, but Don and I made the trip to Lake Pillsbury last year. In talking to the locals we learned there is often a heavy smell of sulphur from the south end of the lake and all of the residents reported they could feel the earthquakes occurring though they were small in nature.

As for Corcoran, though I haven't run a catalog on the area, I know from being an avid quake watcher, this is a location which has few earthquakes.

While I recognize that you are the resident specialist in making determinations as to what seems important or not, I the novice do pay close attention to details and these quakes occurring within a time period of solar flares seemed notable to me.

Other than the above I did also make note that the two 4.+ quakes which occurred in Central Alaska this week were very deep quakes. One of them was 87 miles below the surface. I'm not sure if this is normal for the area, but it's not like anything we've seen in CA.

You're a tough critic Chris, but I am as well, though mostly not in areas related to seismic activity.

Okay, so now I'm ready for your critique of the data supporting my prior post.

Petra :-)
