Re: Mt. Hood Uplift Additional Material |
Hi All. Just thought you would like to know the latest information about Mt. Hood. Nothing to spectacular as volcanoes go, but there has been some uplifting of the area. No idea as to when this started, how much has occurred and if it’s still ongoing, but I do have some inquires out. The following was taken from the KOMO TV 4 News in Seattle. Steve Malone of the seismographic network said they were still not sure Saturday whether the Mount Hood earthquake was directly related to volcanic activity or related to the movement of the earth's plates and stresses and strains that caused the May earthquakes and the larger Scotts Mills quake in Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1993. Those quakes, he said, "Are run of the mill quakes that occur throughout the Pacific Northwest." "The Mount Hood quake had some characteristics that make it somewhat different from those but not clearly volcano-related," he said. "It had some characteristics of both types of events." I’m almost sure that the quake he is referring to is the 4.5Mb quake as in some ways it does appear to be a volcanic quake related to the movement of magma. This is not to be confused with harmonic tremors, which is an indication of continuous movement of magma. This is just speculation on my part and I doubt that there is anyway to prove it, but I’m starting to thing that the recent quakes located in the Gorda Plate, the most recent quakes at Klamath Falls, the bulge at Three Sisters volcanoes and the current ongoing activity at Mt. Hood are all related to the movement of the Gorda Plate. As to the possibility of an eruption at Mt. Hood. I rather doubt it if the current seismicity remains as is.
