Re: 10th Anniversary of Landers/Big Bear Earthquakes

It is interesting to note that prior to this event, especially in the 80s, it seemed to me that scientists in CA were fairly against the theory that one quake on one fault might trigger a large one in another area. I remember after magnitude 5+ events in both S. Cal and the Bay Area, media would often ask USGS, "Could a strong quake elswhere stir the Hayward Fault?" The answer always seemed to be a definate no!

Now, after 92 and Landers, it seems it is an accepted eventuality in both S. Cal and the Bay Area that a large quake may eventually cause another one within hours or days in another area. Here in LA we've all heard the theory that a large San Andreas event by Salton Sea could possibly provoke thrust type events in the 6 range in the LA basin.

Same in the Bay ARea. Scientists have conceeded to the media that a possible 6+ event on either the Calaveras or Hayward could start a 6+ on the Penninsula San Andreas segment.

It is so fascinating to hear these theories and to think, just over 10 years ago, these were theories that were all but unheard of in the science community.
