Rapid Epicenter Determinations - Mystery or Mundane ?

Hi All:

Below is an excerpt from the link:

2002/06/26 07:17:16.2 31.1S 70.9W 100 M 5.6 M GSSC CHILE-ARGENTINA BORDER REGION

2002/06/26 07:15:35.9 30.7N 88.6W 10 Mb5.6 A SED MISSISSIPPI, UNITED STATES

2002/06/26 07:14:42.9 18.4N 90.7W 33G Mb5.2 A MIX YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO

2002/06/26 07:14:38.4 20.4N 93.7W 33 Mb5.2 A LDG BAY OF CAMPECHE

2002/06/26 07:14:24.2 15.6N 93.6W 33 Mb5.1 A NOR NEAR COAST OF CHIAPAS, MEXICO

2002/06/26 07:13:40.7 6.3N 90.5W 30 Mb5.4 A ODC EASTCENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN

2002/06/26 07:13:33.0 5.0N 99.0W Mb6.0 A LED EASTCENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN

Anybody wish to take a stab at explaining why such divergent locations are being reported for a quake which seems to have orginated at:

2002/06/26 07:14:12 14.69N 94.39W 33.0 5.1 A OFF COAST OF CHIAPAS, MEXICO (NEIC)

Let's say there are hundreds and hundreds of seismo's everywhere...why would the above few be chosen to be reported ? Is it as simple as reporting speed (and then truncated to the first 5 or 10 responders) ? Or is there some type of "up waveform" analysis embedded in the reporting logic ?

Note that some Mississippians might feel like they got gipped out of a real roller coaster ride...(Mb 5.6).

Comments are welcome,
