Re: 1906 Earthquake Tsunami |
Hi Don & All, I don't know if I am a little for far sighted than others in regard to these matters, but it never occurred to me that having a tsunami at Pt. Reyes following a 7.0 quake on the San Gregario Fault would be that difficult to imagine. The San Gregario sits adjacent to the ocean, thus a landslide triggered tsunami traveling only a short distance to Pt Reyes seems simple enough to me. One tsunami which affected the San Francisco Bay Area is often forgotten. It was the one generated by the Good Friday 1964 Alaskan earthquake. At the time around 10,000 people flocked to the beaches to see the tidal waves arrival. It did arrive late in the evening as I recall about 9ish. The water receeded from the Bay and many of the boats docked sank beneath their docks and when the tide returned the boats were heavily damaged and some sank. Of course the most puzzling matter here is that people flocked to the beaches to see it. Thus you have to ask, if they were told a big quake was going to arrive in Gilroy, would they flock to Gilroy to have the earthquake experience? It makes you wonder.
