A very neat field trip is to drive hiway 242 west out of Sisters over McKinzie Pass elv 5325 ft. You drive right through a very neat and very rough lava field that is on the north side of North Sister. There is a place that you can go for a walk though a bit of the lava field as well as a observation tower that looks over the lava field and has sighting points to all the local volcano's in Oregon.
