I would encourage you to try to develop your research group to make useful
predictions or forecasts, if that is your interest. Publish them and let the free
market of ideas decide where you and others stand (or if there is a market for
such trivialities as earthquake predictions at all).
Go for it. I am sure others could use the competition.
