NEIS is listing a Ml 2.8 earthquake in New Madrid MO this afternoon. This is the largest earthquake in the New Madrid region since a Ml 2.9 on Feb. 14, 2002. The New Madrid region, like the N.Y./New England area had been expected to see far-field aftershocks following the combination mainshocks on Apr. 18. The FFA forecast had said: "Seismic activity may increase at: ... New Madrid MO." This event was felt slightly in the epicentral area. The timing at this time and the larger than usual magnitude were likely affected by the strong geomagnetic storm and the regional shaking from the New York earthquake. (GSC says this was Mn 5.5) In both cases - New York and New Madrid the seismic activity had increased slightly in the past several days.
