Earthquake Summary for April 10, 2002
Posted by Lowell on April 10, 2002 at 22:44:55:

Ml 5.0 HITS OFF EAST CAPE, NEW ZEALAND

SUMMARY

An earthquake of Ml 5.0 occurred this afternoon off the east
Coast of North Island, New Zealand. This event may have been
felt in the East Cape region according to IGNS. Coincidentally,
the one of the strongest solar flares (M8.2) this year
had occurred at 12:23 UT when the longitude of the epicenter
in New Zealand was nearly exactly anti-solar, and would experience
maximum effects from such a flare.
In another interesting coincidence CSEM has listed an event
at nearly the exact antipode of the New Zealand earthquake of Ml
5.3 in the Balearic Islands, Spain at 15:11 UT this afternoon about
9 hours before the New Zealand earthquake.

GLOBAL

The largest earthquake of the day was a Mb 5.7 in the southern
Vanuatu Islands. This event continued the series of strong regional
events that have occurred in the past several days (Balleny Isl.,
Antarctic-Indian Ridge). Other activity of Mb>4.5 occurred in the
Mariana Islands (Ms 5.0).

The strong seismicity of the past several days in mid-Ocean ridge
systems continued today with new epicenters occurring in the Central
Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Mb 4.4) and the south Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Mb 5.1 and
5.2) and in the Labrador Sea east of Canada (Ml 2.9).

Other moderate activity occurred in northern Chile (Mb 4.4), and in
Sichuan China (Mb 4.5). The Sichuan event is nearly antipodal to the
Mw 6.5 in Central Chile last week. The Labrador Sea earthquake also
is in the antipodal region of the Mw 6.2 south of Australia two
days ago.

U.S./CANADA

The strongest regional events of the day occurred off the Coast of
Northern California this morning (PDT). These events followed by
several hours the strong M8.2 solar flare and registered Mb 4.0 and
3.7 (NEIS).

In the rest of the region of California/Nevada the strongest
the strongest event of the day occurred off the Coast of Southern
California near Pt. Conception, although this is a poorly located
event and the epicenter could change considerably before finalized.
Preliminary Ml for this earthquake is Ml 2.6. Five other events (Ml>=2)
occurred in the SCSN region today - four in the Calexico swarm area
(all about Ml 2.1-2.3) and the other near Tehachapi (Ml 2.0). In
northern and Central California, the only such event was a Ml 2.5
near Mammoth Lakes (other than the events off the No. Coast).

The Pacific Northwest, however, showed a substantial increase
in activity today. Three events of Ml>=2 were recorded today in
the PNSN region after nearly two weeks in which only one such event
had been recorded. The PNSN searchable catalog also shows a strong
(Ml>=3) event near Helena, Montana this afternoon in addition to
a newly listed Ml 3.7 on the Oregon-Idaho border which occurred
on April 6, a significant event for this region.

The eastern U.S. and Canada also saw renewed activity in the
past day and a half. In addition to an event at New Madrid (Ml 2.2),
the first in that area in more than a month, the region of southern
Quebec to New Brunswick was once again active in the past two days
with events of Ml 2.4 in New Brunswick and Ml 2.0, 1.9, 1.8 and 1.7
in the southern Ontario/Quebec region.

No events of Ml>3 were listed in either Hawaii or Alaska today.
A Ml 0.7 event was felt SE of Abbotsford B.C (hard to believe
but true).

NEW ZEALAND

The Ml 5.0 off the East Cape has been discussed in the summary above.
QED also listed several new IGNS events in the Ml 3.5-4.0 range
today which occurred over the weekend. These generally occurred
off North Island. Parameters are listed below.

The IGNS on-line Seismometer can be found at:
http://www.gns.cri.nz/news/earthquakes/latest_drum.html

GEOMAGNETIC/SOLAR FIELDS

The geomagnetic field remained quiet today, however SEC expects
active to stormy conditions in two to three days when the CME
from today's M8.2 flare arrives. There were two M-class solar flares
observed today. About 20:00 Electron Flux became erratic, often
a sign of a geomagnetic storm in the brew. Most of the strong
seismicity of the day followed the M8.2 flare in time.

TIDAL EFFECTS

April 12 is the first day of the new lunar month (new moon).
Regions most likely to experience tidal triggering
on this day (With associated magnitude ranges; the percent change in
seismicity rate over background seismicity rate on this
day of the lunar month; statistical z-value and
significance level) are:

TOMORROW IN EARTHQUAKE HISTORY

April 11 is a relatively light day in global earthquake and U.S. history
with the only damaging event in Chile in 1819.
