Re: Survey– Proposed earthquake forecast registry

Roger, if I remember correctly, the original report outlining that proposed earthquake forecast registry file was posted by me to an Internet Newsgroup and also stored at my EQ-Forecasting Web site so long ago that I cannot even recall what the dates were. No one seemed interested in such a registry at that time. And I have not given the matter much thought since then.

In one of your recent posts you stated that we needed to create some type of forecast registry. After I saw that note I set some time aside and tracked down my original report, updated it a bit and posted another note about it. That updated note was intended to be supportive of your recent note and to be helpful to you. And your comment about not trusting me to run such a Web page was in my opinion quite inappropriate.

I have repeatedly advised different governments and research groups etc. to check various Web sites for earthquake forecasting data, some of which I regard as being potentially valuable. I even created an Earthquake Forecasting Resources Web page at my EQ-Forecasting Web site so that it would be easy for people to locate other forecasting sites such as this bulletin board. But the response that I keep getting is, “We do not have time to go chasing around the Internet looking for earthquake forecasts.”

People are dying during earthquakes when in my personal opinion there are at least some valuable forecast data available at different Web sites etc. And if government officials etc. will not take advantage of those types of data then we would appear to have two choices. We can forget about trying to get them to take an interest in them and just let people die who might otherwise have been saved. Or, we can try developing other resources for those officials such as the creation of that registry page in order to make it easier for them to locate and make use of the available forecast data.

A while ago, in connection with such an effort I also contacted one organization about the possible use of their translation program so that forecasts etc. would be easier for people in other countries to understand.

The registry format described in my report might work. However, if you know of some existing site where forecast data are being stored like that then why not post a note about it and let us know its location?
