Premonitory symptoms and tonight's Mb 6.5 in Northern Chile

Hey Gang,
I have consistently refused to make forecasts to this board, but occasionally I like to point out that
Some precursory signal or pattern might have been associated with a future earthquake. Hopefully
This will cause someone to look further into some of these matters with an eye towards using these
Types of phenomena in short or intermediate earthquake forecasting techniques.

So, when something happens that catches my attention I like to pass it along. Something did happen
This evening that might be significant. An earthquake of preliminary Mb 6.4 occurred about an hour
Ago in northern Chile at 21-22S 68W. This is the largest event in South America in more than
Half a year. It is also an event which I believe the omens were pointing to as I have posted in my
Daily summaries and again yesterday.

In yesterday's post I reminded you of a daily summary statement that had been made on March
12 as follows:

http://www.earthwaves.org/wwwboard/messages/14137.html

"The following statement was made in the daily earthquake summary
From March 12, 2002 that might have some bearing on the Taiwan/Ryukyu
Earthquake last night (Mj 6.9):

'There have been occasions in the past, most notably prior to the
great Alaska earthquake of March 28, 1964, when a series of aligned
earthquakes occurred prior to a great earthquake at an FFA distance
to that event. These events all lie approximately 60 degrees from
a location in Northern Chile at about 20N 68W (or it's antipode at
20N 112E), although there is enough give and take in the alignment
that a number of other focal points could be found (such as TAIWAN,
So. Sandwich Islands, etc.). Generally these alignments of quakes
in the eastern U.S. appear to presage great events by no more than
2 days, but there are also cases where no great event follows.
Coincidentally, several hours after these four events occurred
(three occurred within 4 hours of each other) the largest earthquake
of the day hit at 20S 68W with Ms 5.2 in Northern Chile."

It was also noted in the Ryukyu Far-field aftershock forecast as follows:

http://www.earthwaves.org/wwwboard/messages/14127.html

"The most likely events of Mw>=6 in the next 10 days appear to be:
(Number in paranthesis indicated number of times and event of M>=6
has followed a Ryukyu mainshock within 2-3 weeks).

….
Northern Chile (near 20-24S) especially between 60-70 W"

Fortunately I don't forecast earthquakes or I would need to get some of that
Axel grease that Don has for getting his head through the doorway.
