This phenomenon occurs just moments before an earthquake so I don't think that's the classic case of what animals perceive. From what I understand they pick up some kind of warning because they have magenite in their heads. People also have the same thing. But whatever it is that animals sense it comes on at least a week or more before earthquakes occur.

This pull is something akin to a gravity anomoly.
