Mine was in October or November. I think the area is south of Parkfield and north of Ft. Tejon, most likely on the San Andreas Fault.

To date it has been the most ominous sound I've ever heard. Even the Nisqually, WA quake couldn't hold a candle to this one.

But Loma Prieta was interesting. All during the quake I kept hearing a sound that was like an wounded animal howling. I was covering my ears because it was so loud and today I recall that sound more than the experience of the shaking at the time. To remember the shaking and how I was managing it at the time I have to actually think about it. Its far less vivid.
