I don't know about zoom capability. It's a trial and error process to determine a grid fit to a basemap when you know enough about the map to try it.

Adding FFA rings could be done since most PCs now are fast enough to handle it. The map is only 5 degrees square (+ or -) so seeing a ring segment will be iffy at best.
