The following comments should I feel be considered by people around the world who are attempting to forecast earthquake. These are my own opinions.

The vast majority of earthquakes are harmless. And if you have developed a forecasting procedure which is 100% accurate then most of the earthquakes which you predict will probably still be of little interest to anyone except perhaps some geology researchers. People and their governments around the world are primarily interested in destructive earthquakes. And your forecasts for the many harmless ones and the occasional destructive one will likely be ignored.

I feel that this lack of interest problem is a major one for earthquake forecasters around the world.

The warning signals which I myself am working with appear to me to be highly selective for earthquakes which will occur near populated areas. If I thought that they were instead for the many harmless ones which occur every year then I myself would probably not try to forecast any earthquakes at all.

In saying that I am not trying to discourage other earthquake forecasters. Instead I am simply proposing what one reason may be why our governments etc. do not appear to be especially interested in anyone’s earthquake forecasting efforts. And I cannot see where that situation is likely to change in the foreseeable future.
