Garlock not a thrust fault |
Billion, The Garlock fault is not a thrust fault: it is a left-lateral strike-slip fault. By coincidence, my wife was just reading an article in the Nov 2001 Geology: strain is not now accumulating on the Garlock fault, even though it is a very active fault. Instead, right-lateral strain is accumulating in a narrow belt that cuts right across the Garlock, connecting the Landers EQ with the 1874 (?) Owens Valley earthquake. There is thrust faulting in the Tejon region, but not on the Garlock.
