The Baja Swarm

Hi All. I did a little background search on past quakes for the Baja area, and what I found is very interesting.

The last major quake for this area was a 7.0Ml on 10/15/1979 at 32.6N/115.3W. This is very close to the swarm in Baja. As a matter of fact there is one quake that is very, very close to the epicenter of the 1979 quake. The depth for the 1979 quake was 12Km. With few exceptions the current swarm is much deeper then this. The depth of these quakes appears to be out of the norm for this area, which a rough estimation is about 12Km. There was a 3.5Ml on 01/24/1962 at a depth of 50Km.

There was only one quake before the 1979 quake that truly appears to have been a foreshock.

Everything that I have ever read about the geology of this area indicates that this is in a pull apart area, which is consistent with a rift zone. In some ways though the direction of travel is sort of odd. The North American plate is moving more of less towards the south where as the Pacific Plate is moving towards the north. The portion of the Baja area that is associated with the rift zone is moving west at about 45 degrees to the two plates.

I think it's time for me to just sit back, put my heels up and wait and see what's going to happen next. Take Care…Don in creepy town
