EAR TONE EVALUATIONS
January 2, 2002

Several of the Ear Tone times listed on the EarthWaves Ear Tones List can presently be found on my Seismic Activity And Storm Data Web page:

http://www.freewebz.com/eq-forecasting/131.html

They have the letter code "ETL." People who have been posting their Ear Tone times to that Ear Tones List can check my Seismic Activity page to see where I thought their Ear Tones might have been pointing. I did not spend too much time attempting to determine those locations. And so other locations could actually be better.

It appears to me that Ear Tones such as those can be linked with activities in fault zones where powerful earthquakes have just occurred (but they are not aftershock related) and with approaching earthquakes.

In several earlier notes I stated that I was planning to list some of those Ear Tone time evaluations at that Seismic Activity page. One of the reasons for my stating that was to get people’s opinions regarding the idea. Responses were mixed, some people appeared to like the idea. Some were not as interested. These efforts are intended to help move the science of earthquake forecasting forward. They are not meant to generate controversy. And so I think that what I will try doing in the future is the following. Hopefully this will make everyone happy.

Some Ear Tone evaluations (for other people) such as those will be listed on that Seismic Activity page for perhaps a few weeks or a month or so. That should give the people who posted them to the original list a chance to see what my data processing routines say about their Ear Tones. Then those data entries will be removed from my Seismic Activity page. It would be too much trouble to try to permanently list some there and not others.

Any comments regarding that proposal?

Finally, I have found that quite often when I post a note to this bulletin board there may be a few lengthy note posted in response which contains multiple questions. Like some other researchers, I am constantly talking with scientists, government official, and other interested parties around the world regarding the development of earthquake forecasting programs and earthquake triggering processes. And that is an extremely time-consuming effort.

The notes which I post to this bulletin board are intended in part to be progress reports. And it is simply physically impossible for me to engage in conversations with people which require my answering large number of questions. There are just not enough hours in the day for that.

In other cases I believe that I have made it clear that I prefer not to answer certain questions such as the following ones for one reason or another,

"Why don’t you use your real name with your notes?"

"Why don’t you post your earthquake forecasts directly to this bulletin board?"

Additionally, it would be appreciated if people used "EQF" (only) when they refer to me in their notes posted to this board. Then if someone is less than polite with a comment regarding "EQF" no real person should be affected. That is just a "pen name" which was created especially for notes posted to this bulletin board.

And,

The present EarthWaves board and its sister Yahoo EarthWaves group are descended from an earlier EarthWaves group. And that group followed a group called "QuakeNet." Like Rev. Bob Shannon I am a veteran of all three. And I believe that he would agree with me that if we each had a dollar for every heated exchange which took place in one of those groups then we would both be wealthy indeed.

These are my own opinions.
