Wait a minute... I just read something about that in Annals of a Former World by John McPhee (Great book by the way) - I think it was in the first 'book' (its really 5 books in one) Basin and Range - if I remember correctly (gee - it was only a few days ago too) a geologist names Kenneth Deffeyes was talking about the area - and about a block of land from the Mendicino Fracture Zone down thru the eastern shear zone and then either the Garlock fault or all the way down thru Mohave to the Salton sea at some point breaking off and becoming its own island and then the nevada sea... But thats far, far off in our future!
