I have heard something very similar to that about Shasta..Ther eis a "modern" legend based on WWII. It says that a US AirForce plane crashed into Crater Lake...and from that part comes the strangeness that there is a direct and massive aquifer (*Janes spelling which I think is wrong), exists between Crater Lake and Lake Tahoe. Some believe that bodies have travelled underground in this before and recorded but nothing is...and this stuff existed before the net came along to convince folks.... I like the Native American tales best...
