Concerning the Dec 21, 1812 earthquake: there was an interesting poster by Toppazada (sp?) suggesting that this was on the San Andreas fault and not offshore. The tsunami was due to a landslide (a landslide southwest of UCSB has been mapped for a couple of decades and imaged by Greene et al in press or Eichubl et al in press-which may or may not have slid in 1812). The idea is that the long rupture inferred by damaged tree roots (rings) at Wrightwood 13 days earlier may have instead been a shorter rupture and the rest went Dec 21-the damage at Santa Barbara and Lompoc being due to site conditions. Others think that a large young rupture seen onshore in a trench across the San Cayetano fault is from 1812. I still favor offshore Santa Barbara though-I'm not sure if everyone is familiar with the oral history of what happened on Santa Rosa Island. Chris
