A Sobering Thought

Hi All. I have often wondered if we really know as much as we think we do, or that what we know is what it really is.

No one knows exactly when the composition of Earth’s primitive atmosphere became just right for life to begin and evolve. However it manage to do it we are living proof that it did.

The Earth of “deep time” was an unbelievably violent place - bruising and boiling, scalding and freezing, the land crashing and splitting, the seas overwhelming the land and being driven back. But all that violent past has been leading to our present. What could seem like an unending string of disasters - meteorite strikes, movements of continents, gigantic eruptions, flood and earthquakes, droughts and tidal waves, can be seen as the steps along the road that led to life.

”Subject to change without notice” is a good description of our Planet now. Try as we may we cannot control it. We have a better understanding of how to survive Nature’s threats, but what we think of as peaceful Mother Earth is still a place of violence and change. The Himalayas are still rising, Africa is splitting away from Arabia, The United Kingdom is tilting on its axis, new islands are rising out of the Pacific

Our past evolved from the movement of the Earth, and it seems likely that it will decide our future. As the Earth shifts and changes, so does the climate. But for the first time we have gained the power to intervene in a most destructive way. Our species can trigger earthquakes, foul the air and the oceans, alter the climate and deplete the soil. But are we any better at surviving the consequences of these changes than our ancestors. When the natural cycle brings round another Ice Age we could probably survive slightly better than our ancestors but we could do nothing to stop it.

65 million years ago the undisputed rulers of the world were the dinosaurs. They were wiped out in the blink of a geological eye, probably by the impact of an enormous asteroid. Today, we are rulers of the world, but in the end the rocks and the seas will remain, and we will vanish without trace, leaving the planet as if we had never been.

That is a pretty sobering thought. It’s like sticking your hand in a bucket of water. You can see your hand in that bucket of water as others can see, but when you pull your hand out there is no trace of your hand ever having been there. Take Care…Don in creepy town
