AGU - Final Day - Paleoseismology

Hi All,

Though Don and I didn't have as much time as we would have liked to spend at the AGU today, we did get to sit in on a short lecture by Amos Nur who has studied ancient cities and their demise by earthquakes.

Today he told us about the Sinai Peninsula and explained how an ancient earthquake around an 8 magnitude ripped the area from the North end to the South, which included damage to many ancient cities, such as Petra, Jordan.

While this is a topic we would have loved to sit in all day long, our attention was draw to see a person presenting a poster on the Rodgers Creek Fault's southern segment. This is the area which the USGS will be monitoring shortly and the most dangerous segment of the fault system.

We had a nice chat with the presenter and will have future contact in sharing the middle section of this system with this person and also off to Bennett Valley where that home was damaged in the 1999 earthquake. We both learned a lot from our input with each other. Finally after so many years of trying to make a connection to someone who knew about this area, this week provided two persons to contact.

I've attached a link to a page on the ancient city of Petra. One photo shows the columns that fell in the earthquake. It mirrors every city in the path of the earthquake.

Back to work....Petra
