Negative quakes

Heres another question Lowell or perhaps Canie. I knew the answer a few years ago but have forgotten.

There are frequently quakes in the St Helens area which have a negative attached to them...say
-.09M....Now I think I remember that there is a specific reason for these negative quakes....but I done forgotted....Anyone
