Don's a bit late on the Calexico Earthquake, but better late than never. With the exception of the Mb 4.2 on 28 November in the northern Gulf of California, Southern California has been in the seismic doldrums for more than a week with the largest earthquake south of 36N in the region having Ml 2.3 - lots of these. So tonight's Ml 2.8 earthquake in Calexico looks pretty big given the recent seismic quiet. SCSN is giving the following parameters to this event: O: 02DEC2001 05:07:35 32.3N 115.2W Ml=2.8 SCSN 27 mi. SSE of Calexico, CA Source: http://www.scecdc.scec.org/scecusers/.plan I would be amiss if I didn't mention Don's forecasts for this region (#10909, posted on Nov. 11, 2001): P: 19-23NOV 40 km 32.1N 114.9W Ml3.0-4.0 Baha (Sic), California This was later revised in Post # 10901 for: P: 21-25NOV 40 km 32.6N 115.2W Ml3.0-4.0 E. of Mexicali, Baha CA. Both are late, but fall within the 40 km radius (35 and 33 km distant from forecast) and near the magnitude window. No evaluation on this - just a note. It is also interesting to note his reference to a geomagnetic trigger - a strong geomagnetic storm did occur on Nov. 26, five days before this event. Don's forecast had read (#10909, Nov. 13, 2001) Estacion Coahuila, Baha, California Earthquake Forecast Posted by Don In Hollister on November 13, 2001 at 14:09:54: Magnitude: 3.0-4.0+ From: 11/19/2001UTC - To: 11/23/2001UTC Location: Baha, Caliornia Lat: 32.1N - Long: 114.9W - Range: 40Km Hi All. The quakes in the area of Bombay prompted me to do a search for an area that might be ready for something a little larger. The only one I could find that has a good chance of occurring is at 32.1N/114.9W. This is about 20Km SSE of Estacion Coahuila, Baha, California.
The magnitude on this should be 3.0 to 4.0, but in the event of a geomagnetic storm 2 to 4 days before the forecasted date the magnitude could be a little larger. It should occur on 11/21/2001. The widow will open on 11/19/2001 and will close on 11/23/2001. The radius on this will be 40Km. The current data for the Bombay area shows nothing inside a 58 mile radius. The trigger (s) lay outside that radius. Of course there is always the chance that these quakes are related to the most recent geomagnetic storm? Revision (#10910, Nov. 13, 2001):
"The second one should occur at 32.6N/115.2W. This is about 25Km east of Mexicali, Baha, California. Should occur on 11/23/2001. The window opens 11/21/2001 and will close on 11/25/2001. The radius on this is 40Km. The magnitude will be 3.0 to 4.0Ml In the event of a geomagnetic storm 2 to 4 days before the forecasted date the magnitude could he higher. Take Care...Don in creepy town"
