Tokai Quake Special

Hi All. I watched the special on NHK TV, Japan tonight and what I learned doesn’t sound too good.

There is a slow quake going on in one section of the fault that is close to Nagoya. This started about 2 years ago. It is moving upwards and outwards. At first they didn’t think too much about it, but they are having second thoughts now. This was determined through the use of GPS. They don’t know if this is a precursor to the big quake, or just another phase to go through that will one day lead to the major quake.

The Philippine Plate is subducting under the Eurasian Plate and as it does it is pulling the edge of the Eurasian Plate in the area of Suruga Bay down as well as pushing it back. It is thought that when it breaks (causing a 8.0+ quake) it will spring back up and outward causing a tsunami from 5 meters to 9 meters high. That is about 16 to 30 feet high. I can tell you right now that as close as the towns are in that area to the beach front they will have no chance to escape before the wave hits in the event of tsunami. They may have 2 minutes at best.

I hope to have more information as I have sent some e-mail out looking for a English translation. Take Care…Don in creepy town
