You may wish to consider playing it safe with Max by:
1) Don't allow food to pass by the wound (since an infection in this location could get serious).
Instead use a blender to convert all of Max's food to liquid and teach him to straw it in past the wound in his mouth. Cooler food particles can harbor bacteria and get stuck in the wound area.

2) It may be painful for Max, but you may want him to use listerine (or a milder mouthwash) to kill off any germs in the wound area. (Following with a tap water rinse may knock off the burning sensation if any is felt).
