Hi Nancy,
I don't recall hearing from you on this board before. If not, a hearty welcome from
all of us. There is a great deal of ULF and ELF signals among members of this
board, so anything you can post on this interesting topic, we would all be interested
in reading.
As for your question on ELF from the San Andreas at the time of the New
Britain earthquake on October 31 - think about the physics. ELF will be generated
from any very long object in synchronous vibration along it's entire length. This
is like a very long pipe in a pipe organ or a string on a bass chello. The longer
the vibrating body, the lower the sound (i.e. the longer the wavelength emitted)
For very long objects, ELF and ULF are emitted.
The San Andreas can be likened to a long string, what is required is to set
the string in vibration. How can that be done? I suppose one way is for seismic
waves to hit all portions of a section of the fault simultaneously. This could happen
if a wave arrives which wave front is parallel to the fault. Then the fault begins
to vibrate at the wavelength of the seismic disturbance - this could conceivably
set up ELF or ULF on the San Andreas at the time of the New Britain earthquake,
whose wave fronts arrive nearly parallel to the San Andreas in some areas.
