Didn't the other (Soviet?) plane crash (?) conjecture get discredited based on distance from being solar/anti-solar, etc.... wasn't it?

Since it was an instrument landing, just maybe the geomagnetic storm altered the aircraft's compass leading to the wrong flight vector. If so, ground instruments just might be able to support the idea (by possibly showing anomalies at the same time). Mountainous regions are less forgiving on alignment errors....
