Seems the best thing is to take the back-azimuth of the wave and compare it with the strike of the fault being affected. For maximum effect, the two should be perpendicular. Data is available on strikes of most faults (from moment tensors of earthquake that occur on those faults) and finding the back-azimuth to the mainshock is a simple thing.
