California is one huge place and only traveling the terrain can one understand how much distance lies between LA and San Francisco. In the larger sense there are many area's inbetween that may never in our lifetimes see any activity at all.

But those gut feelings should always be taken into consideration. Being, here, rather than there, where you are, the term "coastline" means next to the ocean. I think you mean the general area that includes the San Andreas Fault and some Bay Area faults as well. Is that correct? :-) Or can you redefine the area a little?
