MILD EARTHQUAKE (ML 3.3) HITS CENTRAL MAINE, U.S.

SUMMARY

A mild earthquake hit Central Maine this evening (Ml 3.3). This
is the largest earthquake in Maine in more than a year-and-a-half.
The parameters (NEIS) of this event are:

O: 25Oct2001 00:24:29 45.2N 68.7W LG=3.3 NEIS MAINE
Note: This is probably a far-field aftershock from the Banda Sea (Mw 7.5)
earthquake of October 19. The FFA forecast from that event had stated:

"Areas of U.S. and Canada where triggering may occuR (Ml>=3)

New England/Eastern New York"

This earthquake is just north of Bangor, Maine and is the largest in
the general vicinity since a Ml 4.1 on July 28, 1995. It is the largest
within 100 km of the epicenter since Feb 22, 1999 when a Ml 3.8
occurred about 100 km southwest of this location.
It is the largest in Maine since two events of Ml 3.5 and 3.6
occurred near Lewiston on Jan 3 and Jan 17, 2000.
Two foreshocks occurred in the general area (north on the Quebec/Maine
border in the past two days. Parameters from GSC are:

O: 23OCT2001 07:35:27 47.5N 70.0W ML=0.0 GSC SE FROM LA MALBAIE, QUE.
O: 22OCT2001 09:43:24 47.6N 69.8W MN=1.8 GSC E of LA MALBAIE, QUE.

GLOBAL

It was a relatively quiet day on the global earthquake front today.
The largest earthquake was a Mb 5.2 in the Virgin Islands. This
event is at the westernmost area of the aftershock zone and may
indicate an area of high stress where the next sizable earthquake
may occur. If so, then the highly-stressed areas north of Puerto
Rico and the Dominican Republic could be next. These area are
overdue for a great earthquake/tsunami. Local residents should
prepare for the eventuality of a great quake/tsunami at any time.
An Mb 5.0 also occurred in the Kermadec Islands. The most unusual
earthquake of the day occurred off the Coast of Southern Chile (Mb 4.9)
and last night as two events along mid-ocean ridges - a Mb 5.0
on the southern Mid-Atlantic ridge and a Mb 4.8 on the southern
west Chile Rise.
Other events of Mb>=4.5 occurred in the Mariana Islands
north of Guam (Mb 4.6) where a series of light shocks have occurred
since the Guam event, in the Tonga area (Mb 4.5, 4,4) and near the
coast of Nicaragua (Mb 4.7).

U.S./CANADA

The largest earthquake in the U.S./Alaska region outside Alaska
and Hawaii was the Ml 3.3 in Maine this evening. This is reported
on in the summary above.
The California/Nevada area snapped out of a period of quiet in the Ml>=2
range which has lasted for several days. Twenty-one earthquakes of Ml>=2
have occurred in the region since the last report, making this the
most active days in the region since September 2, 2001. The most
active region was the Mammoth Lakes/Bishop area with events of Ml 2.9,
2.9 and 2.5. Ocotillo (Baja) saw the largest event of the day with
a Ml 3.1 this evening preceded by a Ml 2.7 and a series of events
near Ml 2 this morning in the Borrego Springs area. Other mild
tremors occurred near Loma Linda (Ml 2.6); Claremont Colleges (Ml 2.7);
and Arvin (Ml 2.4) in southern California. Besides the Mammoth Lakes
and Bishop events in Central and Northern California, events also
occurred at Viola (Ml 2.6); the Geysers (Ml 2.0, 2.2); near King City
(Ml 1.9); west of Parkfield near Avenal (Ml 2.2), and near Rio Dell
on the Coast of northern California (Ml 2.3).
The Central mountain states also have been active in the past
past two days. Events of Ml 2.8 and 2.3 were reported near
Emery and Fairview, Utah yesterday. and earthquakes of Ml 2.9
and Ml 2.3 were reported in Idaho near Cascade (Oct 21) and
Stanley (Ml 2.3) respectively.
In Alaska the largest event was a Ml 3.7 near Kodiak Islands.
Earthquakes of Ml 3.1, 2.9 and 2.8 were observed near Kilauea,
Hawaii, where increased seismicity is expected at this time.
No reports of events of Ml>=2 were available from other areas
of the region at this writing.

NEW ZEALAND

The current swarm in the Seddon area of South Island continued
today with a reported Ml 4.0. However, the on-line seismogram showed
several other (unreported as yet) earthquakes in the same general
region with Ml>=3.5 as well as a number of smaller events.
Two moderate earthquakes also occurred in the southern Kermadec
Islands region (Mb 5.0 and 4.4).

The IGNS on-line Seismometer can be found at:
http://www.gns.cri.nz/news/earthquakes/latest_drum.html

GEOMAGNETIC/SOLAR FIELDS

The geomagnetic field was extremely quiet today following the
geomagnetic storm several days ago. A new CME is expected to
arrive today. Watch for apparent ground motion on seismograms
associated with the sudden commencement storm. The quiet conditions
currently throughout most of the world seismically may be broken
about the time the new CME arrives.
There were no M- or X-class flares observed on the sun today.

For general space weather conditions see:

For Solar flare data see:
http://sec.noaa.gov/ftpdir/indices/events/20011024events.txt

TROPICAL STORMS

Tropical Depression Narda is about 1100 km SE of Hilo, Hawaii.
Current forecasts expect Narda to weaken and dissipate before
reaching Hawaii. No seismicity is expected from this storm although
Hawaii could see significant far-field aftershock activity in the
next several days even without any effects from Narda. For a public
advisory on Narda see:

http://www.wunderground.com/auto/HurricaneSite/tropical/cp200103.public.html

Typhoon Podul is now classified as a Super Typhoon with winds up
to 127 knots. It is still located in the west Central Pacific Ocean
and moving northwesterly. For a public advisory see:

http://www.wunderground.com/auto/HurricaneSite/tropical/wp200101.public.html

TIDAL TRIGGERING (LUNAR)

Statistics have been done on many regions of the world in terms of
relationship of significant regional earthquakes with respect to lunar cycle.
Each report will summarize the most likely areas for tidal triggering
for the next day based on these statistics. It is expected
that tidal triggering will add an additional 0.5 - 1.0 units of
magnitude to events which are about to occur or will move these
events forward in time by up to seven days in the regions where
there is a statistical correlation between lunar phase and
earthquakes.

October 25 is nine days after the beginning the lunar month.
Regions most likely to experience tidal triggering on this day
(With associated magnitude ranges; the percent change in
seismicity rate over background seismicity rate on this
day of the lunar month; statistical z-value and
significance level) are:

Region Magnitude range %change z-value Significance level

Mt ST. Helens MB>=1.0 55 4.1 0.01
Washington MB>=3.0 19 3.3 0.01
Japan (JMA) MB>=4.0 14 2.0 0.05

Regions expected to experience reverse triggering (i.e. they are
unlikely to experience a significant event at this period of the
lunar cycle) are:

This earthquake is just north of Bangor, Maine and is the largest in

It is the largest in Maine since two events of Ml 3.5 and 3.6
