I can only speak for myself of course but for me, after 34 years in seismology and programming, I can't BUY a job.

My programming was in fortran and truebasic, neither of which are used in industry. I don't know Java or html enough to be useful and by the time I learned them, something else would be the "in demand" thing.

I did work for a software house for a year using Pick Basic but they demand only the best and after I made 3 mistakes in that year, they let me go.

So I struggle along throwing papers at night.

It's a living.
