No, I don't think that is the reason we are seeing the swarm. I would suspect that if that were the case, a weaker crust in LA, micro quakes would be as common here as they are in Hollistor or Coso Junction. The best analogy I've ever heard to describe the geology here is imagine you have a mirror. Now place the mirror on the floor. Now take a hammer and smash the center of the mirror. You could imagine the gazillions of little cracks along with the big ones that you would see all over the mirror, right? That is how Cal Tech invisions the fault structure under the LA basin. Tones of little active strands every where. Why these little pieces held so strong as a group the last 6 years quietly and are now begining to pop in little spurts here or there is anyone's guess. But I don't think it is connected to a weaker crust and I don't think the stress relief on this complex structure is being relieved with these little snaps.
