A geologist has mapped the formation of North America across hundreds of millions of years, showing the continent as two relatively tiny land masses 450 million years ago to what it looks like today.

Ron Blakey, of Flagstaff, Arizona, has been sketching maps for decades. His first pen-and-ink maps date back to when he was writing his doctoral thesis in the 1970s.

He graduated from pen-an-ink to using computer graphics programs in the mid-1990s. In an interview with the Atlantic, Blakey said he started out using Photoshop to clone modern topography onto ancient maps."
