The problem with copying the drive with the Windows operating system is that certain files are expected to be located in specific sectors on the hard drive at boot time (notably the boot sector). Just copying the files does not do that. That's why it won't boot.

There are programs that will take car of that, but I find the method messy and not guaranteed.
