This is an interesting report on some recent research related to determining the composition and temperature of the Earth's core.

According to the authors, the core is some 1000 degrees hotter than previously believed. Also, at the center it is a solid form of iron surrounded by liquid iron. The pressure at the interface of the two is 3.3 million atmospheres. And the temperature at that location is 6000 degrees Celsius.

The study reportedly helps explain how the Earth's magnetic field is generated and why volcano "how spots" exist.
