The EarthWaves board has in the past dealt with a variety of Earth activity related subjects besides earthquakes. And our global energy picture has a lot to do with things that will affect many other areas of science such as the environment and the availability of government research grants etc. Earlier today, President Obama nominated an MIT physics professor, Ernest J. Moniz, to be the new Secretary of Energy.
Looking at his credentials on Wikipedia.org etc. it appears that he might be ideal for the job. I like the fact that two of his specialty areas are nuclear physics and environmental science. Nuclear power could be helping us solve our global energy shortage. But someone with a good sense of direction, some experience with or at least interest in that area of science, and a strong environmental background needs to be helping make U.S. Energy Department decisions. It was quite surprising to me to hear that the Clinton / Gore administration was so strongly opposed to anything having to do with nuclear power. But, that is what I have heard from some fairly reliable sources. In any case, I am planning to start contacting U.S. Policy Makers and other appropriate parties and add my own $ .02 to the information being considered for discussion when Dr. Moniz has to go before the U.S. Senate and answer questions before he is confirmed. These are personal opinions.
