Re: Eastern Standard time vs. Universal time vs. M8.0 quake

This exact concern is what I had in mind when I put that time widget on the page - when was the post/prediction made vs when did the quake occur? I removed it after sensing resistance to making changes to the forum when I asked for opinions on such changes, deciding instead to leave things as close to original as possible.

I can put the time widget back, but I think a more important thing to ask is, what sort of date stamp should the messages have? My thinking is that it should be in UTC rather than some local time zone. That way there is less confusion since quake events are stamped in UTC anyway, and the time widget will help show users where they are relative to UTC.

Programing wise, the change is simple.

As for editing, I thought about it. Disregarding the PITA for the programming, I thought about the potential problems it could cause. The message would have to be marked as having been edited. But then people would wonder what was edited (what? why? motive?). So, to solve that, it would need to show the original and the edit would just be added on. But then, how's that any different than simply posting a new message with the corrections? So with that thinking, it seems a moot point.
