In a post below Billion Watts queried whether we were at a low level of activity in California at the present time. I have done some statistics to answer that question. It is likely that the count that BW is making is off the web data which is substantially increased after the final catalogs are prepared. The web data shows only confirmed (immediately) events. Since SCSN has stopped providing preliminary determinations to the web site, the count is probably down in immediate events as BW observes. However, BW's question deserves some statistical checking. I have combined the NCSN and SCSN catalogs for the period Jan 1, 2001 through October 8, 2001 (their extent) and counted the number of total events in California per week. The average including the weeks of the swarm at Coso Junction is 599 events per week with a standard deviation of 397. Taking out the weeks during which Coso Junction was active, the average number per week is 496 with a standard deviation of 86. In the non-Coso statistics, seismicity of the region has actually been slightly above average during the past 6 weeks. Below are two tables of numbers of events per week with and without Coso swarm. The first column is the week number, followed by the number of events during that week and the z-statistic of that number measured against the average and standard deviation. If the z-value is negative the number is less than expected, if positive, more. Z-values of 1.93 are significant at the 0.05 level, of 2.73 at the 0.01 level. In this regard, the only weeks with significant increases in seismicity were weeks 17 and 20. No weeks during 2001 have shown significant decreases in seismicity.
