Am at the Southern California Earthquake Center annual meeting (which really starts tomorrow night). I sat at Motel 6 most of the day to export 27 fault strands offshore southern California for the Community Fault model. They are shown in a manuscript I submitted a couple of weeks ago Maybe getting that published (accepted) will not be as much of a nightmare as the last one.

WOW!!!! Thanks for that!!!

Two things I see. First, the expanding cloud of condensing vapor from the shock wave is known as a Wilson Cloud. They were made famous from nuclear tests.

Second, if you repeat the explosion sequence repeatedly, you can see that at the very beginning of the explosion part of the ash cloud actually outpaces the condensation cloud, meaning it came out of the volcano FASTER than the speed of sound. If this were explosives, by definition this makes it a detonation, which involves the thermal reaction moving through the medium at supersonic speeds.

A question or two. Does anyone know the name of the ship in the foreground and its lenght? That would help with the scale of the scene. Also was the ship hit withflying rock? Other than that OH WOW!!!!

I don't know anything about the ship, but it's not necessary to answer your question. In fact, since it's likely much closer to the camera than the volcano it would give a false perspective.

Per Wikipedia, Tavurvur is 732 ft tall.

This distance between the two peaks in the background is a little under 2 miles. The one on the right is about a half mile behind and the left one is about 1-1/4 miles behind (along the line of sight of the camera).

Based on the time it takes to hear the shockwave, the boaters are about 2-3/4 miles way. (roughly)

The shoreline from the peak towards the viewer is at least half a mile away (on the left side) to about .9 miles (on the right). So the bombs are flying at least that far in distance.

And based, VERY roughly, on the time it takes the bombs to reach their highest point, they go up about 500 feet above the peak. Therefore they fall about a 1000ft or more to the water.

Attached is a KML file with my best guess to the camera's location. Double clicking on the pushpin will zoom the camera down to water level and the approximate field of view.
