California Quiet

California seems rather quiet, seismically speaking, right now (June 9) Even the little swarm in the SB Channel has stopped.l

Maybe we're just mourning California Chrome (sorry, couldn't resist!)

First science post form you in a long time Penny! So, how are the UFOs around Shasta?

Now that you mention it, yes, no M2.5 or higher quakes south of Mendocino. It's hard for me to compare on the little quakes because I generally open the USGS page for only M2.5+. So, I've lost track of what is normal.

OK, the list of M2.5 shows the last M3 in California was May 5 (20 km NNE Big Bear Springs).

That is probably unusual.

YES! Nice to see you're still here, Penny. Smile

I check the maps daily (sometimes more) and for local I look at all magnitudes. Been doing that for 15+ years.

Things seems pretty normal to me as far as background activity. We did have a spate of larger quakes for a few months which begged the question of whether we're having more quakes than usual. But it seems to have quieted off.

I think we are still in a "quake shadow" after all the stuff in the 80's/90's - Landers, Hector Mine, Northridge, Whittier Narrows. We should probably be expecting things to pick up again.

I had noticed a definite change in patterns after El Mayor in Baja regarding far southern California. There's more tiny quakes down there than there used to be. My guess is things are adjusting to the new static stress field after that quake. What it means for faults like the San Jacinto or Elsinore??? Time will tell, but I think it's good to be cautious.

Well, did not take long to have M3s: three 3 and up, one a 4.0, in last 24 hours.
