I'm at UCSB and saw a plywood wall memorial with writing on it to the 6 victims of the Island Vista massacre (community right next to UCSB). It brought a couple of tears to me, even though I don't know any of them and live far from here.
It did cross my mind that if I had walked into Isla Vista for lunch, I would have been more concerned about getting mowed down by car, knife, or gun than an earthquake. And, UCSB and Isla Vista sit in a really bad position above active oblique thrust faults I am working on.
