This quake was 300 km from Okinawa (and Kadena air base).

Using the USGS database search, I find 696 quakes M5 and larger since 1950 within 500km of Okinawa. That's an average of 10+ per year, or one every 34 days.

There was only one quake in 1964, an M5.6 on January 6th. And none in 1965. The Alaska quake was in March. I think whatever you felt were smaller local quakes.

Nothing unusual given the tectonics of the region.

It wasn't much. Just dishes rattling a bit. We did feel something fairly often, the whole northern part of the island is volcanic, southern part is just a big coral shoal. Pretty much dormant, but there was sulphur in the air a few times. Probably just a steam vent. Dad was stationed at Naha AFB. Farther south than Kadena. We lived on an Army installation, Machinato, which was about halfway between the two. They were still finding unexploded grenades and naval shells in 1965.
