M5.3 strike-slip south of Santa Barbara - Island Chris - 04-05-2018 There was just a M5.3 quake south of Santa Barbara California, and a little south of Santa Cruz Island. Is strike slip. I have been involved in interpreting faults and stratigraphy in that area. There is a thesis: Sarah Schindler (now Brinton) 2010 Cal State Bakersfield. And a paper by Greg De Hoogh, Sorlien and others on the area farther south, but it includes some material from the Schindler thesis. I'm waiting for aftershocks to see which fault it might be on (if we mapped it). Chris RE: M5.3 strike-slip south of Santa Barbara - Skywise - 04-06-2018 I didn't feel it. Was at work. But I got to share some of my quake knowledge with my boss. No aftershocks as of this writing. Kinda odd. The network around here is pretty sensitive. So far...don't see any aftershocks either. Curious. Penny RE: M5.3 strike-slip south of Santa Barbara - Island Chris - 04-09-2018 There are now 2 aftershocks to the NW and north a couple of km: M2.4 and M2.6. I looked at the seismic reflection data and see no significant faults down to basement reflection near the epicenter. Basement is about 5 km depth but 1.8 km of that is water: deep basin. Good to see Brian and Penny posting. Thank you for the info. I knew you'd chime in eventually knowing that you worked in that area. Yeah, sorry I've not posted much. I've been so busy with work and life. Plus I've been spending time on a new website & blog venture having to do with bicycle safety (or lack thereof) where I live. I am working hard to settle some parts of my life and when that eventually works out, I do want to get back into posting here more. I'm glad the few that are still here are doing well. Brian RE: M5.3 strike-slip south of Santa Barbara - PennyB - 05-03-2018 I have been noticing a lot of 3 plus quakes this week to the east of this quake. Wonder if a stress transfer is happening? OR...maybe gearing up for something more significant? RE: M5.3 strike-slip south of Santa Barbara - Island Chris - 05-03-2018 Hi Penny, Not sure what quakes you refer to. There were a couple of M3+ quakes near San Clemente Island in the last few days. How is life near Mount Shasta? How are the Wooo-Wooos (alien believers or whatever)? I wonder if those still around should post who they are and how they are doing. I'm officially retire too for the last year but trying to get manuscripts out. I would post more of others like you and Brian who make good science posts were posting also. Although I've lost some interest. Chris |
