Chile M8.3 and tsunami - Island Chris - 09-17-2015 There was a M8.3 quake in Chile yesterday that generated a significant tsunami. I am in Santa Barbara, and the arrival time here for the first wave is in about a half hour. There is an advisory: there are expected to be currents in the harbors etc, but not a big wave. What's your source? I saw some pictures of ships on the roadway down there. I heard that there was a 16 foot wave. But, that was it. Some of these ships were pretty huge. Looking for info . . . . NOAA National Tsunami Warning Center http://ntwc.arh.noaa.gov/ Not far below the map are links to "Observations and Forecasts" which is where I got the above info. Also links to an energy map and travel time map. But yes, Coquimbo, Chile had a 15.7 ft wave reported. Valparaiso was 5.9 ft, Talcahuano 3.9 ft. to round off the top three. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center http://ptwc.weather.gov/ National Data Buoy Center http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/ Lots of details in the advisory notices themselves, linked to on the above pages. Brian RE: Chile M8.3 and tsunami - zinnanti - 09-19-2015 Thanks a bunch. I'll check those resources out. Well, here in Southern California, we have activity to the south, to the north and to the east (Big Bear). I guess it's only a matter of time before we have something significant. Best - Tony |
