programming humor - Skywise - 01-05-2014
While googling for answers to some of my programming questions, a discussion thread made references to the following website, appropriately titled "Computer Stupidities".

Many of the stories are C related so a few might not make sense, but the rest should split a few ribs with laughs.
Here's one particular gem...
Quote: My Friend: "Yesterday, I reprogrammed my computer."
Me: "Okay...."
My Friend: "Not my Mac, but my PC. It has Windows Vista."
Me: "Yes, and what language did you use?"
My Friend: (pause) "English."
Me: "English?"
My Friend: "Yeah, English."

Neither one. My computer runs Win XP.
I write programs in TB that run on the PC.
I SHOULD be able to write in English. In fact I tried to write an English to TB TB program but it's much more complicated than I thought.

Human language is far too ambiguous for a computer to easily understand. Why do you think 'legalese' was invented? Or look at the language of science. Words are used in very precise ways to avoid ambiguity.
And that's not even taking into account the fact that some (most?) people don't use words in their proper meanings anyway.
I think it will be a long time before we can talk to a computer like on Star Trek. It's getting there, though.

In Seattle's Aviation community XP means experimental, so that means Windows XP was an experiment to see if the general public would use it.
Windows Vista came from someone who liked the old Fibber MaGee and Molly radio program's as their adress on the show was was 79 Wistful Vista Lane!
