Earthquake fault heightens California tsunami threat, experts say

"For decades, some seismic experts believed the Ventura fault posed only a moderate threat and was incapable of producing a major temblor.

But research in recent years shows that the fault is extremely dangerous, capable of producing an earthquake as large as magnitude 8 as well as severe tsunamis that until now experts didn't believe were possible from a Southern California quake.

Thanks Brian,
That is the fault system I am working on. Note the simple fault model in the article, from the Hubbard and others papers, vs. the complicated geometry on the figure from my talk at USGS. I forwarded the link to someone at USGS working on the system, as well as someone at UCSB working with me.

I get a bit of heartburn (wrong word?) because we did a lot of work on this system in the late 1990s and did not publish it; it is on Sorlien & Kamerling USGS reports, especially 2000, and is part of the SCEC Community fault model, as well as many abstracts. My current work will get published, but in 2016.
